There's a mobile amusement park that has been visiting my old hometown of Hermanus for as long as I can remember. As a child I remember it fondly but each year the rides got fewer and they seemed more worn out. I met the proprietor one night while I was taking pictures and he said that they hit a different town almost every week, travelling around South Africa on a well established circuit. These days Hermanus was not bringing in the same profits for the carnival that it used to. There were very few patrons on the two nights that I was there which made it seem so spooky. There was something sinister and sad about the lonely rides lit up in the surrounding darkness, slowly going to ruin to a tinny circus soundtrack. It was this uneasy feeling that I tried to capture in these images.
